Health Checks

If you have any concerns or just want to make sure your horse is still happy and healthy, we offer health checks and free weight clinics* to put your mind at ease.

Blood Sampling

We have three blood testing machines in the practice where we can run blood for haematology and biochemistry. This can be done as a general health check or for cases when your horse is ill. Sometimes we will send off the blood samples to a lab for further testing including cushings, EMS and strangles etc.

Vaccinations

Flu vaccination protocol for non Thoroughbreds

  • 1st injection day 0

  • 2nd injection 21 - 60 days

  • 3rd injection 120 - 180 days

  • Annual boosters no greater than 365 days

Please check with the governing body of where you’d like compete for their exact rules and whether you need a 6 month booster within the date of competing.

 

Flu vaccination protocol for Thoroughbreds racing under BHA rules

  • 1st injection day 0

  • 2nd injection 21-60 days

  • 3rd injection 120-180 days

  • 6 monthly boosters no more than 6 months apart

 

Tetanus vaccinations

  • 1st injection day 0

  • 2nd injection 4-6 weeks later

  • 3rd injection 1 year later

  • Boosters every 2 years

  • Usually given as a combined vaccine with flu vaccinations

 

Equine herpes virus (EHV) 

  • 1st injection day 0

  • 2nd injection 4-6 weeks later

  • 6 monthly booster

The vaccinations for EHV do not stop horses getting EHV but will reduce the shedding so the vaccine works better when it’s done on a whole yard basis. Pregnant mares need vaccinations every year

5, 7 and 9 months of pregnancy
